Do It Yourself: Measure Your Attic Insulation
To find out how much insulation you have in a particular area of your home, you can measure it yourself.
Just follow these three simple steps:
Step 1: Measure the depth of your insulation using a ruler. The insulation depth will vary, so take an average, after measuring at several points.
Step 2: Determine the type of insulation you have. From the pictures below, choose your insulation and note the R-value.
Step 3: Use this formula to determine the R-value of the area you measured:
Inches of insulation____ X Insulation R-value____ = Total Insulation R-value____
Example: 8" insulation depth x 3.2 R-value = 25.6 R-value
