But ask a professional to thoroughly inspect your home, and you might learn that it isn't performing as well as you would like. A professional energy evaluation will give you insight into your home's weak areas. This will help you put together a priority list, moving things that you should do right away close to the top and placing the things that can wait at the bottom.

Expertise

The professional who conducts the audit will have all the tools and techniques necessary to give you an accurate assessment. But the personal touch cannot be underestimated. Your trained professional will have years of experience in assessing a home and finding common problem areas.

In addition, he will take the time to talk to you about how you use your home, and he will show you key ways to boost your energy efficiency, such as lowering your water heater’s temperature setting and changing your air filter regularly.

Tools

An energy-efficiency technician will then conduct a formal inspection. This process includes a visual evaluation of your home’s interior and exterior, as well as a thermographic scan and a blower door test.

Thermographic scan – Using a camera that goes over your home with infrared technology, your inspector will be able to see areas where air leakage and thermal losses occur. Able to detect and measure the temperatures of your home, the infrared camera will see cool areas, which show up as white on the camera, along with warm areas, revealed as black on the camera. In this way, the results will show where insulation is lacking.

Blower door test – This device connects to your home’s exterior door. It uses a fan to draw air out of your home, which will pressurize it to reveal air leaks. This test is often done in combination with the infrared camera, because air leaks will show up as black streaks on the infrared camera.

With a professional energy evaluation, you'll be able to target inefficiencies in home performance and make improvements to increase comfort and savings. Here are a few things that should be considered first when installing a high efficiency heating and air conditioning system to attain maximum energy efficiency.

The Air Distribution System: The ducts should be sized and designed to distribute the amount of airflow the air conditioning and heating system produces. If a homeowner upgrades their equipment, but the house has old ducts, the duct system will not allow the equipment to meet its designed efficiency.

Refrigerant Lines: If you are upgrading your air conditioning and heating system to a 13 SEER or higher, the refrigerant lines should be replaced. Without replacing undersized Freon lines, a high efficiency unit will operate at a lower efficiency level.

Installation: Efficiency is only achieved through proper installation. Design manuals must be carefully followed to deliver its operating capacity. An installer must also understand system design, airflow design, how to achieve maximum capacity and how to achieve maximum airflow delivery. All Roscoe Brown technicians follow manual installation instructions and are factory trained.

But the most vital aspect that differentiates the size of a heating and air conditioning unit is the cooling capacities. The way this is measured is by how many “tons” of cooling your unit carries.

A ton of cooling is now defined as delivering 12,000 BTU/hour of cooling. BTU is short for British Thermal Unit, which is a measure unit for heating or cooling energy. Usually, an air conditioning unit in a smaller Tullahoma, Murfreesboro or Nashville, Tennessee home will use about two tons and a unit used in a larger home would be about five tons.

Air conditioners generally range from 5,500 BTU per hour to 14,000 BTU per hour. For example, a typical window air conditioner might be rated at 10,000 BTU, but a typical 2,000-square-foot Tennessee house or business might need a 5-ton or 60,000 BTU per hour air conditioning system to perform properly and maximize comfort.

This is a misconception. The fact is that heat pumps can be a great heating and cooling alternative to a furnace or air conditioner. A heat pump is an efficient method of warming your home in winter and cooling your home in the summer. Heat pumps have been around for over a half of a century and look like air conditioners and have two functions, both based on the same principle:

WARM WEATHER: Heat pumps work like air conditioners, extracting heat from inside of the home and transferring it to the outdoor air through a condensing process.

COLD WEATHER: The process is reversed and heat is collected from the outdoor air and transferred inside your home. The pump pulls the heat from the outdoors and sends it inside to warm your home, using a similar process a refrigerator would. When there is not enough heat in the outside air to meet the demand of the thermostat setting, an electric heater supplements the outdoor air to warm the home to the desired temperature.

Furnaces turn fossil fuel or electricity into heat, while heat pumps collect heat that already exists by means of its refrigeration cycle. A heat pump will produce two to three times more heat than the energy it uses. In other words, heat pumps save you money!

A heat pump can also be an effective add-on option to use in addition to an existing gas furnace. With a dual-fuel system, the two systems share the heating load but never function at the same time. Each system operates when it is most cost-effective; thus, keeping your home warm in winter and cool in the summer, while saving you major dollars in utility bills.

If you have any questions regarding how a heating pump can help you save money, feel free to schedule an appointment by calling toll free 1-888-MY-ROSCOE (1-888-697-6726).

Repairing Versus Replacing Your Old Air Conditioning Unit

When your air conditioning breaks down, the first thought that probably runs through your mind is: Will I be able to get it fixed, or will I have to purchase a new system?

It is usually less expensive to repair the unit than replace it. However, there are a few factors to consider before deciding whether to repair or replace. For example: the age of your air conditioning system. Remember that your air conditioning unit has an estimated service life of 10 to 15 years. Fixing an air conditioning unit that should otherwise be replaced, may just be a temporary solution and can cost you more money in the end.

Here are several factors to consider before making a decision:

The cost to repair versus the cost of purchase and installation.

The extent of the energy inefficiency of the old unit.

Some units’ repair parts may have been discontinued or are soon to be unavailable in the market.

The time that it will take to recover the cost difference between repairing and replacing, considering that older units use up to 50% more fuel/electricity than new high efficiency units.

Is another breakdown expected in the near future or is the repair going to keep the unit running for a long period of time?

Consider the benefits expected from the new unit; such as tax credits and/or rebates.

That’s a little much, don’t you think? So let’s focus on a few basic tips for energy efficient and effective winter heating for your Middle Tennessee home:

HVAC System Maintenance
Neglect and dirt are the two main causes of HVAC system failure, so be sure to maintain your equipment. Any time is a good time to schedule a check-up of your heating equipment to make sure your system is operating at peak performance. Check and clean your system’s air filters every month. Make sure to replace if necessary.

System with Energy Star
Whether you are replacing light bulbs or HVAC appliances in your home, Energy Star qualified products can help you save energy and reduce energy bills.

Programmable Thermostat
Regulate your home’s temperature while you’re away or asleep by using one of the convenient pre-programmed settings on a programmable thermostat. When used properly, programmable thermostats can save you up to $180 every year in energy costs.

Improve Insulation in Your Home
As much as 20 percent of the air moving through your home’s duct system is lost due to leaks and poor connections. Sealing air leaks with caulk or spray foam, or weather stripping your doors and windows will have a significant impact on improving your comfort and reducing energy bills.

Instead of waiting until the sneezing and watery eyes take over, AC or heating repair or installation can prepare your home or business offices ahead of time for those days when the pollen starts to fly.

In the Nashville TN area, as well as in nearby areas of Murfreesboro TN and Tullahoma TN, spring scenery is defined by beautiful green trees and colorful flowers. Unfortunately these plants, which add to the beauty of Tennessee, also make spring a difficult time of year for those who suffer from allergies. A secure home or office with efficient air conditioning and clean, well maintained heating ducts can greatly reduce allergy symptoms.

With AC or heating repair or installation, we can help you prepare for spring and the onset of allergy season. Efficient air conditioning means you can keep your house or office cool without opening the windows to let the pollen in. If your AC or heating unit is in bad shape, repair or maintenance can prevent leaks and other issues that reduce the purity of your interior air. In the Nashville TN area, we can provide repair and maintenance for your AC or heating units, or install new ones based on your needs and the size of your house or business.

In the Murfreesboro TN and Tullahoma TN areas, we can evaluate your current AC or heating systems and provide expert repair, maintenance or new installation as necessary. We can also improve the efficiency of your current systems to reduce allergens such as dust that might have collected in the air ducts. With this advance preparation for spring, your family or employees who suffer from allergies will be much more comfortable when the pollen count starts to rise.

What Should I Look For In A Service Agreement?

An AC or heating maintenance agreement can save you a lot of money when it comes to heating or cooling your home. A service agreement with Roscoe Brown, in Murfreesboro, Nashville or Tullahoma TN provides you with several benefits for one annual fee. Since most HVAC providers offer them, it is important to know what features you should expect.

The primary feature of an AC or heating service contract is that you receive a bi-annual tune-up of your heating and cooling units. As a homeowner in Murfreesboro, Nashville or Tullahoma TN, we recommend a tune-up every six months. We prefer to have the furnace and air conditioning system inspected every spring and fall to ensure they are ready for the heavy demands of summer and winter. Making sure you schedule these two appointments every year means you’ll be much less likely to have a system that struggles to operate, operates inefficiently, or breaks down when you least expect it and need the system the most. Your service technician will also give you maintenance tips to keep things running smoothly between visits.

Other benefits of a service contract include discounts on repair, installation and new sales. You should make sure you understand the nature of these discounts. Some HVAC providers give across the board discounts, while others limit them to only parts and labor. Still others throw in an extended warranty on new installation beyond what the manufacturer provides.

Priority scheduling for non-emergencies is another benefit of being enrolled in a maintenance agreement. In most cases, this means you can get a same-day or next-day appointment and your request will take precedence over customers who are not enrolled in a plan.
