The Basics of Keeping Your Home Comfortable
Modern homes aren’t always the best when it comes to moving a breeze through and keeping rooms cool. Homes in northern areas are usually built with heat conservation in mind, and they can become quite warm and uncomfortable when the mercury starts to rise. Here is what you should know about keeping your home at a comfortable temperature throughout the year.
The Sun Matters
You should know how the sun travels across your property so you can take advantage of, or completely avoid, the heat it will add to your home. When the temperature is cool, keep window shades open during the day to let the sun warm your home naturally. As the temperatures rise, you should keep the blinds closed so you can hold on to the cooler temperatures inside the home.
Air Filter
Whether you are running the air conditioner or the furnace, you should always make sure the air filter is clean. This will allow the unit to work more efficiently, prolonging its life. Check the filter every month and change if needed for clean comfortable system operation.
Annual Service Inspections
Nothing will save you more money and help you keep your house comfortable than investing in regular inspections of your furnace and air conditioner. Small problems can be caught and repaired before they turn into major issues that leave you sweltering or freezing. Even when your unit is running fine it can still benefit from an inspection and cleaning.
Consistent Temperatures
It’s tempting to shut down the air when you’re not home to save money. The problem is that you will cause your unit to work twice as hard trying to cool the house when you return. Leave it on and allow it to rise about eight degrees. Your house will be more comfortable when you arrive and you will ease the strain on your unit.
